Will Grigg claims that Sunderland's defeat to Charlton in Sunday's League One play-off final is the first time that he has 'fallen short' in the division, having previously won promotion out the third tier four times.

After joining from Wigan in the January transfer window, Grigg struggled to make an impact for his new club, scoring just four goals in 20 league appearances for Sunderland in the second half of the season.

Reflecting on his first few months at the Stadium of Light, Grigg told the Sunderland Echo: "This is the first time I've fallen short in this league, it's been a disappointing season for myself and I want to make sure it doesn't happen again next season."

Assessing the performances of his new side as whole, Grigg did not hold back with his comments as he claimed: "We're not a bad side but we're not a great side.

"We've done alright but it's just those little bits here and there, that little bit of quality in the final third or shutting up shop at the back. It's just been the story of the season."

Prior to joining Sunderland, Grigg, 27, had won promotion from League One twice in three seasons with Wigan, having also done the same with both Brentford and MK Dons earlier in his career.

The Verdict

Given his record in League One, it was a surprise that Grigg did not hit the ground running at the Stadium of Light.

It is possible that this could have been something of a hangover from a difficult first half of the season at Wigan, and his goalscoring ability and promotion experience at this level could still prove crucial to Sunderland's hopes of promotion next season.
