Swansea City striker Sam Surridge has admitted he wants to become the club's leading frontman after impressing against Fulham during his second league start of the campaign.

Steve Cooper's side fell to a 2-1 defeat against the Cottagers in the Liberty Stadium clash on Friday night, but Surridge produced a strong performance in attack as he continually tested the Fulham defence and went close to giving his side the lead early on.

The Bournemouth loanee has not yet established himself in the Swansea starting line-up since joining the club over the summer, but he has been frequently used from the bench and has made a total of 18 appearances this campaign.

It has recently emerged - as per BBC reporter Jordan Clark - that Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is considering the possibility of recalling Surridge in January due to a striker shortage, but the 21-year-old appears solely determined to nail down a regular spot at Swansea following his recent start.

Speaking to the club website, Surridge claimed he has gained a lot of confidence from his performance against Fulham, and he is now focused on becoming Swansea's main man in attack for the remainder of the season.

“The fact that I’ve done well against a top team like Fulham gives me a lot of confidence going into the games ahead," he said.

“Hopefully, I can start again next week and get some goals because I want to be starting all the time; I want to be the main man.

“I’m a confident person so I’m sure that if I’m playing well and the team’s doing well then we’re going to get wins and the goals will come.”

Surridge scored five goals in his 18 appearances since joining the Liberty Stadium outfit back in August, with two of these goals coming at crucial times during league victories over QPR and Wigan.

The Verdict

Surridge has experienced a challenging start to life at the Liberty Stadium, with Cooper tending to opt for either Andre Ayew or Borja Baston in attack ahead of the England U21 international.

However, the young attacker has rarely put a foot wrong when he has been called upon by the Swansea boss, and the fact he impressed from the start against the Cottagers means he should now expect more regular starts in the near future.

The 21-year-old is clearly a talent and he has already proven his goalscoring ability this campaign, so there is every chance he will be able to nail down a starting place at the club during the second half of the season following his settling-in period.
