Wigan Athletic confirmed their Championship survival with a 2-0 victory over Preston North End on Easter Monday.

Paul Cook's side had been embroiled in a relegation battle in recent months, but Leon Clarke and Lee Evans were both on target on Monday to secure their safety.

Gavin Massey provided a huge boost for the Latics in the aftermath of this victory by revealing he is keen to extend his contract at the DW Stadium.

The 26-year-old underlined his quality on Good Friday when he scored a brace as Wigan secured a memorable 2-1 victory over promotion-chasing Leeds United.

His good form has seen Derby County and Nottingham Forest weigh up a summer move for the player, though his latest comments may suggest a deal will be harder to attain for the aforementioned duo.

Massey's deal runs out in the summer and the lively attacker has been linked with moves to Derby, Nottingham Forest and QPR.

However, he has now expressed his happiness at Wigan and wants to further extends his stay after signing from Leyton Orient in 2017.

"I know I’ve said this before but I do love being here at this club," he told the Wigan Post.

“Obviously with the situation at the club – and us not knowing if we were coming or going – it wasn’t straight-forward.

“But now we know our destination is the Championship, hopefully that can get sorted over the next few weeks.”

Massey did not feature much for the club in the first half of the season, but he had now featured 19 times in the Championship for Cook's men and scored five goals.

The Verdict

This will be very pleasing news for Wigan fans.

The Latics must now build on this survival boost, and they should start by keeping hold of their best players.

Massey has been an important player in recent weeks, so the fact he has played down transfer rumours should come as a huge relief ahead of next season.
