It promises to be a very busy summer at Aston Villa regardless of whether Dean Smith’s side win promotion back to the Premier League.

He will want to make his own mark on the squad and Swansea City defender Mike van der Hoorn has been suggested as a potential target.

And, you can understand why. The classy Dutch defender has enjoyed a fine campaign in Wales and has established himself as a key player for Graham Potter.

However, he is out of contract in the summer, although the Swans do have a one-year option and Wales Online are reporting the club will activate that.

Whilst it may seem common sense to protect your asset, there is still a feeling that the former Ajax man will move on but with Swansea’s financial situation, it’s a risky move.

The defender will be on a decent wage having joined in the Premier League years and as they desperately try to cut costs he will be one to move on.

So, the question now is whether Villa, or any other potential buyers, will be prepared to fork out a fee and how much the Championship side will want for the player.

From van der Hoorn’s perspective that’s a worry.

At 26, he is approaching his peak and he will be keen on getting a move to a more ambitious club, even if that’s not what Swansea fans want to hear – with Villa the perfect fit.

He will see they are on the rise and naturally you would want to be part of things and playing in the Premier League will be his ultimate goal.

So, this latest contract update is sure to be a frustration and van der Hoorn will hope he won’t be priced out of a move when the window opens.
