Bolton Wanderers have been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks, with a poor on field effort matched with absolute chaos at boardroom level.

Phil Parkinson’s squad have been caught up in an ongoing takeover saga involving Ken Anderson and Laurence Bassini, with unpaid wages even forcing the Bolton players to go on strike for 48-hours earlier in the month.

And, it hasn’t helped matters on the field, with Bolton cut adrift in the Championship’s relegation zone and seemingly heading for League One in a matter of fixtures.

What becomes of a playing squad that has been messed around remains to be seen, with players such as Sammy Ameobi surely set to be open to any offers to remain in the Championship next season.

The 26-year-old is an unpredictable talent, but he is a talented winger, who with the right guidance and squad around him, could terrorise most defences.

Ameobi hasn’t been in blistering form this season for the Trotters – scoring four goals and registering three assists – but it is worth remembering the squad and circumstances he’s been playing in during 2018/19.

Having progressed through the ranks at Newcastle, Ameobi never lived up to Shola’s reputation at St James’ Park, but he was still highly thought of in the North East and was a player with massive potential.

Now, his peak years are coming, and he’s currently heading for League One with a precarious club in Bolton.

He might not be the only player who jumps ship when the summer comes around, but he’s sure to be one of the first to attract interest from elsewhere, as clubs look to steal themselves a bargain early in the summer.

League One isn’t the place for Ameobi to finally realise his potential, but neither in Bolton, with the winger needing a steady, reliable club around him.

The kind of turmoil at the University of Bolton Stadium isn’t helping anyone, let alone the 26-year-old.
