According to the Mirror’s live transfer blog (19/12, 00:28), Swansea City have agreed a £2m fee with Barnsley for the transfer of Andy Yiadom, who is edging closer to the exit door at Oakwell.

Yiadom’s future has been well speculated recently, and with the defender rejecting fresh terms at Oakwell, he is expected to leave in January, with Barnsley cashing in before the expiration of his contract in the summer.

The right-back was close to leaving the club in the summer, but a proposed move fell through. However, Swansea are set to swoop for Yiadom, agreeing a £2m fee with Barnsley, with the Sky Bet Championship outfit accepting a cut-price, having originally wanted £3m.

Swansea are set to land Yiadom, 26, ahead of West Bromwich Albion, who are also in the race to sign the defender.

Yiadom has been at Oakwell just 18 months, but has made a strong impact, making 45 appearances for the club and helping to establish Paul Heckingbottom’s side in the Championship.

So far this season, injuries plagued Yiadom’s early involvement, but the 26-year-old has featured in Barnsley’s last 10 Championship fixtures.

The Tykes currently sit 20th in the Championship table, four points outside the division’s relegation zone.

The Verdict

It has been clear for some time now that Yiadom’s career lays away from Oakwell, with no new deal agreed between Barnsley and the player.

Barnsley are certainly doing the right thing by cashing in on Yiadom in January, as £2m will give Heckingbottom the opportunity to rebuild at Oakwell, with the hope his side can avoid relegation in the New Year.

Of course, Barnsley will be frustrated they have had to drop their asking price, but £2m is still a good fee for Yiadom.
