Marc McNulty has lashed out at criticism of his scoring record after sealing his loan switch to Sunderland, as reported by the Sunderland Echo.

The Reading striker struggled for goals following his move from Coventry in 2018, but did manage to score a few for Hibernian during a subsequent loan move.

Some of his critics have suggested his goals return is not adequate for the Black Cats needs, but he's refuted that suggestion, defending his record in the process.

"I remember the first season I came down to Sheffield United. I was only 21, in and out the team, but I scored goals in League One then,” said McNulty.

"I'm older now, more experienced and a lot better player now than I was then. I'm confident in myself and I don't need to prove anything to anybody. I need to work hard, get my head down and repay the gaffer for bringing me here."

The former Sheffield United man has also confirmed he expects to be playing a slightly different role in the Sunderland setup, which he thinks will aid his cause.

“He (Jack Ross) sees me as playing in behind the striker, which is great. I'm pretty flexible and I prefer to be playing around other players so I think that will get the best out of me."

McNulty rose to prominence during his time with Coventry City in 2017/18, where he scored 28 times in 52 outings, earning them a place in League One via the play-offs.

The Verdict

It's interesting to hear he'll be playing behind the main forward; that'll surely impact his goals to games ratio. It's odd that in one breath he's defending his previous return, then in another revealing he'll be playing deeper.

It's bound to result in fewer goals but, if he's amongst the assists and Sunderland do well, it might add another string to his bow should he return to Reading.

He does have a lot to prove, that move to the Championship didn't pay off and sometimes, a man on a mission is more effective than one without a need to back up his previous endeavour.
