Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Steven Caulker is training with Wigan Athletic, according to reports.

Wigan Today is reporting that the free agent has linked up with the Championship side in the hope of earning a deal with the Lancashire side.

Caulker has been without a club since his departure from Scottish Premier League side Dundee at the end of last season.

Aston Villa had been linked with the former England defender too in recent weeks, but the 26-year-old has since decided to join up with Paul Cook with the view work his way into winning a contract with the Latics.

Also according to Wigan Today, Cook still thinks his side lack depth and is keen to look over the defender ahead of any potential deal.

Wigan have returned to the second-tier after their promotion last season and have started the season in fine form.

With Dan Burn on loan after his move to Brighton in the summer, January will see the defender leave the club, and there will be a void in the Latics’ back-line Cook will be keen to fill.

And Caulker could be that man if he impresses during training and U23 fixtures that he will be eligible to play in.

The Verdict

This has come out of left-field and could be a shrewd signing for Wigan if they can get him back to his form of old that he showed during his time at Spurs and Cardiff.

When Dan Burn leaves there will be a gap, and Steven Caulker could be a free option to all the void.

He is still only 26-years-old, so he is by nowhere near being over the hill with his prime years still ahead of him,

A move to Wigan could be a lifeline after his career had stalled after a short-term stint in Scotland with Dundee.

Villa were interested, but it looks like they have missed the boat with Caulker linking up with Wigan in the hope to earn a deal.
