26-year-old defensive sensation keen to extend Millwall stay

Millwall defender Shaun Hutchinson would be keen on extending his time at the Championship side beyond the summer, reports London News Online.

The 26-year-old made the move across the capital last year following a two-year stint at Fulham, although his time at Craven Cottage yielded just 42 first team appearances, only nine of which came in the Championship back in the 2015/16 season.

However, the English centre-back helped the Lions win promotion from the League One play-offs last season with two goals and an assist in 19 league appearances, and although injuries thwarted his progression last term, he’s clearly a key part of things at the Den having started all five of their Championship matches this time round.

The 26-year-old penned a two-year deal when he signed for Millwall last summer, but the club did say at the time that it came with the option of another 12 months, and it’s fair to say that Hutchinson would be happy to remain at the Den beyond next summer.

He said, when asked about the situation: ‘I’ve not really thought about it but from my point of view I’m really settled here, enjoying it and I’ve been playing.

‘If a discussion was to come along then it is something I would most definitely tell them that I’m very happy here and more than happy to stay.’

These comments are sure to intrigue Millwall supporters, who saw the defender cap off a fine start to the season by netting in their 4-0 demolition of Norwich City prior to the international break, in turn securing their first league win of the season.

And Hutchinson will likely be named in Neil Harris’ starting line-up once again when the campaign resumes this weekend, with the Lions facing a tricky trip to high-flying Wolves on Saturday.

The Verdict: Injuries may well have blighted Shaun Hutchinson’s progress at Millwall last season, but the defender started in all three of their League One play-off encounters to suggest that he was an integral part of things at the Den.

And the 26-year-old has gone from strength to strength at the start of this season with five successive Championship starts for the Lions, the latest of which saw him bag the fourth in their 4-0 thrashing of Norwich City.

And Hutchinson’s recent comments suggest that he would love to remain at the club beyond the summer, what with his contract set to expire at the end of the season albeit with a 12-month extension available, although the defender remains professional and fully focused on the job in hand.

He may well feel that good performances for the club this term would be enough to secure his future at Millwall.
