Bristol Rovers are set to sanction Gavin Reilly's exit from the club on loan, as reported by the Scottish Sun.

Reilly, a former SPFL striker with Hearts, is poised to join Michael Duff's Cheltenham Town on loan for the season. The 26-year-old scored four goals in 29 outings last season after Darrell Clarke signed him from St Mirren.

He fell out of favour and looks set for a season on the fringe at Rovers, prompting the possible move to the League Two side.

Reilly began his career with Queen of the South, netting 42 times in 133 appearances as they fought their way back from relegation into the Scottish Championship. That prompted a switch to Edinburgh side Hearts, but he struggled for goals hitting just four in 32 outings.

He only started 16 league games last season as the Gas struggled for goals, a problem eventually remedied by the capture of Jonson Clarke-Harris. His arrival at the club saw Reilly fall out of the first team picture.

The Verdict

This could be a huge capture for Cheltenham. Reilly has played at the pinnacle of the Scottish game and suffered from being in a relatively poor Bristol Rovers team last season. He's only 26 and still has a lot to offer.

It's a win/win situation for Graham Coughlan's side though. They lose a player from the wage bill but get to see how he does with regular football under his belt. If he thrives, he grows in value and returns to them as an asset. If he doesn't, he's merely in the same position he is now.

The Robins might be a dark horse in League Two next season. Reilly is just the sort of figurehead they lacked last season after selling Mo Eisa and whilst he won't be a like for like replacement for the pacey frontman, he will be a real goal threat.
