Grant McCann has said that he expects Middlesbrough to avoid relegation from the Championship this term.

The Teessiders are currently on a run of 10 games without a win - a run which has left them sitting in 21st place in the table.

Jonathan Woodgate's side looked good value for three points as they took on Hull City on Sunday, with the home side taking a 2-0 lead early on before Marvin Johnson's red card turned the game on its head.

Jarrod Bowen's second half brace meant that Middlesbrough came away with just a point, but despite letting their lead slip the Hull City boss said that they have far too much quality to be embroiled in a relegation battle.

Speaking after the game, as quoted by Teesside Live, McCann said: "I knew they were a good team: speaking to Adam Clayton before the game, who I've played with and George Friend, they've played well, they just haven't got the rub of the green.

Can you name every Middlesbrough player of the year from the last 15 seasons? Have a go!

"Watching the game back last week against QPR they were excellent,When you've got players like (Britt) Assombalonga, (Ashley) Fletcher, Paddy McNair, (Marcus) Tavernier when he's on his game, they're a very very good team."

Asked if Middlesbrough will stay up, McCann said: "This league is so unpredictable you can't predict what will happen. With the quality in this football club I'd probably say so."

The verdict

While on paper it appears that Middlesbrough have some good players, it's worth remembering that nothing is guaranteed in football.

Plenty of teams have suffered relegation with a team that was 'too good' for the division, and it's up to Middlesbrough to ensure that they don't fall into the trap over being overconfident.

If they do, it may well spell trouble.
