It was an afternoon where things so nearly clicked into place for Middlesbrough, but one moment of madness rendered all of that work worthless.

The Teessiders had taken a two-goal lead in the first half against Hull City before a reckless challenge from Marvin Johnson turned the game on its head.

It was a needless challenge in an area of the pitch where the Tigers were nowhere near threatening, but a raised boot with studs facing up was only going to end with a card of one colour.

Johnson left his teammates to battle and scrap against the 11 men of Hull City, but unfortunately the challenge of facing in-form Jarrod Bowen and co was too much for the out of form Teessiders to contend with.

Instead, an afternoon of relief turned into one of disgruntlement as Jonathan Woodgate's side made it 10 games without a win.

It was clear to see as Marvin Johnson left the pitch that he'd let the team down, and his manager said as much as he spoke to the press after the game.

As quoted by Teesside Live, Woodgate said: "That performance until Marvin gets sent off. But it's a lack of discipline (from Johnson). You can't tackle like that and expect to stay on the pitch. I've told him he's cost the team and he knows it himself.

"He's said nothing. What can he say? He knows he's cost his team, he can't really answer anything back, can he."

The winger knows that there's no excuse.

At 28 years of age you can't blame inexperience; it's all down to a lack of discipline which cost his side two points against Hull City.

Can you name every Middlesbrough player of the year from the last 15 seasons? Have a go!

But not only that, it will leave his team short of options as he faced a three-match ban for being sent off.

Marvin Johnson has played a much more central role that he'd have expected to this term, and up until now he's proven himself as a trustworthy member of the squad.

However that might change after this display.

If Middlesbrough are to get themselves out of trouble they need players who can battle and scrap but keep their heads, and based on the 2-2 draw against Hull City, there's a huge doubt over whether Marvin Johnson fits into that category.
