Sheffield United’s John Egan is convinced the Blades have what it takes to secure promotion back to the Premier League this season.

Chris Wilder’s side were excellent last year on their return to the second-tier, with only a late season collapse preventing them from finishing in the top-six.

However, after a summer of shrewd recruitment, including the addition of Egan in a club-record deal, Sheffield United’s squad looks in much better shape for a promotion push.

That’s been reflected in the start that Wilder’s side have made, with the Blades sitting fourth in the table and only two points off the top after nine fixtures.

Egan has been talking up Sheffield United’s promotion credentials, telling the Sheffield Star that he wouldn’t have moved to Bramall Lane if he didn’t feel like promotion was a possibility: “My ambition is to get to the Premier League.

"I wouldn’t have come if that didn’t match the club and manager’s ambitions.

“Our belief is that we want to be up at the top end of the table all season. To do that we have to keep winning games."

The 25-year-old has featured in all nine of Sheffield United’s Championship fixtures so far this season, scoring one goal and impressing at the heart of defence.

It’s expected that Egan will continue this weekend against Millwall, with Wilder’s side looking to maintain their strong start to the season.

Depending on results elsewhere over the course of the weekend, victory in London could see the Blades move to the top of the Championship table.

The Verdict

It’s a big claim from Egan, but after the start Sheffield United have had, it’s easy to understand why the playing squad is so confident.

That confidence is going to be massive for the Blades over the course of the season, as they need belief if they are to stay in promotion contention.

A tough trip to Millwall will give us a clearer idea of how well prepared Wilder’s squad is.
