Jack Butland is Liverpool’s first choice goalkeeping target this summer, as the Premier League club look to solve their goalkeeping troubles.

According to a transfer report in the Guardian, Liverpool are keen to take Butland off Stoke City’s hands this summer, with the goalkeeper amongst the Reds’ top targets.

Loris Karius has struggled at Anfield, with his performance in the Champions League final costing Liverpool.

The Reds are on the lookout for a new stopper, with Butland their primary target.

Stoke are preparing for life back in the Championship following their relegation last season, and risk losing the 25-year-old, who has established himself in the England squad for this summer’s World Cup.

Over the course of his career, Butland has made 193 club appearances so far during his career, including 88 for Stoke.

36 of those came last season, with Butland featuring in 35 of Stoke’s 38 Premier League fixtures.

Despite Stoke’s relegation to the Championship, Butland impressed, earning himself a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad this summer.

Butland is currently in Russia with England, but was an unused substitute in Monday’s 2-1 victory over Tunisia.

The Verdict

Butland is a superb goalkeeper, who would be an upgrade on Karius at Liverpool.

The 25-year-old hasn’t had a real chance at a big Premier League club, but that could all change this summer.

Stoke will do well to keep Butland on board in the Championship, particularly with Liverpool lurking.

A deal might not be cheap, but it could be worth it for Liverpool, such is the talent Butland possesses.
