Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Rajiv van La Parra says he wants to fill Bakary Sako's shoes next season, and replace him as Wolves' talisman.

Rajiv van La Parra could be the man to step up to the plate

The former Netherlands under-21 star signed for Kenny Jackett's side following their League One winning campaign the year before - he signed a three year deal after arriving on a free transfer from Heerenveen.

The explosive winger and his team missed out on the play-offs narrowly last year, with it all coming down to the final day, but they couldn't make up the goal difference against Millwall to finish sixth.

He's hoping to keep up his good form at the Molineux after making 10 assists and scoring twice in his first year, and he wants to replace Bakary Sako at the club, who's left on a free transfer and looks set for a Premier League switch.

The 24-year-old told Shoot: “My goal is to score a minimum of 10 goals and provide more assists next season. And of course, I want my team to be playing for promotion again.

“I think I will reach my goal because I have improved my game over here, I have played in the Championship now and I have a lot of confidence going into next season.

He [Bakary Sako] was very important for us. He will be a big loss but, at the same time, it is also a big opportunity for someone else to step up and be the main man now he has gone.

“Someone else, like myself, needs to stand up and be as important as he was last season and that is what I am expecting of myself. I have spoken a lot with the manager [Kenny Jackett] and he has given me a lot of confidence that I will be his replacement.

“Now it is down to me, I need to prove that I can be the main man.”

Kenny Jackett is building a squad this summer to mount a Premier League push, after only just missing out on the play-offs last year.
