After bursting onto the scene back in the 2015/16 season, Sunderland winger Duncan Watmore looked like a seriously exciting talent.

Scoring three Premier League goals in 23 appearances to help the Black Cats survive, he had the air of somebody who was destined for success at the top of the English game.

But by October of the 16/17 season, those hopes took a huge knock as he suffered a nasty knee injury, one that would end that season and rule him out of the majority of the next one too.

After suffering a similar injury a few weeks into his return last season, he has only recently made his comeback to Jack Ross's squad, playing in eight of their last 11 matches and starting their midweek draw with Blackpool.

Sunderland come up against Accrington Stanley tonight, but Ross delivered a hammer blow in the build-up to the match: Watmore had suffered another setback.

Ross did reveal that it was part of his recovery plan, not allowing him to play two games, but how will the player feel after this revelation?

He will be frustrated, no doubt, but at the same time he will have known that it was coming and if it stops him from getting injured again further down the line then it will be nothing but a good thing.

Watmore still has plenty of potential and does not seem to have lost that pace and flair that made him a success four years ago.

He just needs to be sensible right now to ensure he can show that over a long term period.
