Swansea City's season has been a poor one on the whole this term, with the Welsh club failing to challenge for the top six with any sort of consistency.

Graham Potter has done well enough in his first season in English football as manager, but he will be more than keen to see his team improve going into next season and he'll be looking for new players, as well as current squad members, to step up.

The form of Daniel James has been one of the biggest pluses of an otherwise negative season for the Swans, with the Welsh winger becoming a key figure for Potter's men following his failed transfer to Leeds United in January.

However, James' form hasn't been the the benefit of everyone in the squad, and one man in particular who has suffered because of James is former Nottingham Forest man, Barrie McKay.

McKay seems to have suffered the same fate at both Forest and now with Swansea, in that he has started both spells well enough, but has ultimately drifted away from regular starting places and has found himself struggling to establish himself as a top player.

With James' future up in the air more than ever though now, the time is now for McKay to step up and become the player that many thought he could go on to become when he first broke into first team football with Rangers.

There's little doubting the tricky Scot has the talent, but he is missing something, and what that is is something only the player himself will be able to answer.

If indeed James does make a move away from the club in the summer, then McKay could well be the man who is tasked with stepping into what will be big shoes to fill, and it could be a case of now or never for the 24-year-old.

Swansea will be expecting to do much better next season as they aim to win back a place in the top flight, and McKay - if he can step up - can be a key cog in any success the club has going into the 2019/20 campaign.
