Declan John has handed Swansea City a boost ahead of their return to Sky Bet Championship action at the weekend, with the summer recruit in contention to make his debut.

The Swans swooped to sign John on transfer deadline day last week, with the Ranger left-back arriving at the Liberty Stadium on a long-term contract.

On arrival, John had a minor back problem, which forced him out of Swansea’s 1-0 victory over Preston North End at the weekend.

However, an announcement has come on Swansea’s official website today, confirming that the 23-year-old has been back in full training today, and will be in contention to face Birmingham City at the weekend, as Graham Potter’s side look to maintain their 100% start to the season.

Potter moved to bring John in to compete with Martin Olsson at left-back, with the arrival of the 23-year-old also set to allow Matt Grimes freedom to move back into midfield, after he provided competition for Olsson over the course of pre-season.

John, an ex-Cardiff City left-back, has arrived at the Liberty Stadium after a year in Scottish football.

During his time with Rangers, the left-back made 31 appearances, scoring three goals for the Ibrox club.

The Verdict

This is good news for Swansea, with John potentially an exciting addition to their squad.

The left-back adds to Potter’s options, which is going to be vital over the course of the season.

Whether John will be in contention to start against Birmingham remains to be seen, but his availability will be greeted well by Swansea’s supporters.
