We often see big money spent across the Sky Bet Championship when it comes to transfers, with clubs looking to reach the Premier League.

However, some club’s success is built on the bargains they can pick up in the summer or winter, with a variety of talent available both abroad and on home soil.

With that in mind, we take a look at what we believe is the best ‘bargain XI’ in the Championship from players signed before or during the 2018/19 campaign:

We start in goal with Kiko Casilla, who arrived at Leeds United from Real Madrid on a free transfer. Although we’ve not seen that much of the Spaniard, the club he arrived from and his experience make him a real coup.

In defence we’ve gone for Jack Robinson, who joined Nottingham Forest as a free agent, alongside Preston North End’s Jordan Storey and Bristol City’s Adam Webster.

Webster did cost a significant fee at £3.6m*, but the impact he’s had and his value now make him a bargain.

John Obi Mikel is our defensive midfielder, with Middlesbrough doing exceptionally well to add the Nigerian on a free transfer.

He’s joined in the middle by Oliver Norwood, who cost Sheffield United just under £2m*, and Derby County’s Duane Holmes.

Said Benrahma’s minimal fee of just over £1.5m* is beginning to look a steal for Brentford, whilst the same can be said for Emi Buendia at Norwich City, with the Canaries paying £1.35m* for the Argentine’s service.

In attack we’ve gone with David McGoldrick and Teemu Pukki, two free transfers that are proving to be exceptional for Sheffield United and Norwich. McGoldrick has 11 goals and three assists for the promotion-chasing Blades, whilst Pukki has a Championship high 23 goals for his side.
