Charlton Athletic's exciting Dutch full back Anfernee Dijksteel will be forced to wait for a resolution over his future, as reported by the News Shopper.

The 22-year-old has a year left to run on his current deal, but has already been in talks about an extension after his recent outings at right back.

Addicks manager Lee Bowyer has admitted he thought the youngster would have penned a new deal by now, but that as yet that hasn't happened.

“He hasn’t signed yet. I thought it would be done by now if I’m honest, but that’s something we will pick up after the end of the season.

“He’s still got a year left. We just thought he had done well, so we’ll reward him with a new deal.”

The Addicks season rumbles on beyond the 46 games, they finished third in the League One table and now face a two-legged play-off with Doncaster for a spot at Wembley, where either Sunderland or Portsmouth await.

As for Dijksteel, the former Nike Academy graduate has started 21 League One matches this season, taking his total to 29 since August 2016. The former Netherlands Under 20 international is growing in stature and confidence and is clearly part of Lee Bowyer's long-term plans.

The Verdict

Right now, why would anyone pen a new deal at the Valley. The manager hasn't, several first team players haven't and Dijksteel has a year left to run anyway.

There's a lot riding on the next two or three matches. If they go up, it could be the start of their resurrection. Fail to earn promotion and the promising green shoots of recovery will be torn up and stamped on.
