Kalvin Phillips has revealed that he is excited about working under Marcelo Bielsa, as Leeds United’s players prepare to return to Thorp Arch for pre-season training under the Argentine.

Leeds moved to appoint Bielsa last week, with the 62-year-old agreeing a two-year contract at Elland Road, with work set to begin on Monday, when pre-season training starts.

Phillips, who scored seven goals and registered three assists last season, has admitted that he can’t wait to get to work under Bielsa, with the hope he can develop the youngster’s game.

@LUFCDATA has quoted the 22-year-old’s interview with Sky Sports this morning: “I've heard a lot of world class managers speak very highly of him. I'm excited to get in & work with him because I've read he's good at working with young players. Hopefully he can get a good team in, do the job this year and get Leeds back to where we belong."

Bielsa is inheriting a squad that struggled last season in the Championship, with Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom unable to get Leeds challenging for promotion, as the Whites stumbled to 13th.

Leeds will start the 2018/19 campaign with a difficult fixture, with Leeds taking on Stoke City at Elland Road on August 5th.

That clash with Gary Rowett’s side will be Bielsa’s first taste of Championship action, with Leeds’ first month of the season amongst the most difficult in the division.

Leeds travel to Derby County, Swansea City and Norwich City before the end of August, as well as welcoming Rotherham United to Elland Road.

The Verdict

Bielsa’s reputation is magnificent, with Leeds getting their hands on an impressive head-coach ahead of the new season.

The 62-year-old has a reputation of developing young players, and he could be brilliant for Phillips, who enjoyed his most consistent season so far last year.

There is still plenty for the 22-year-old to work on, but Bielsa could be the coach that helps him develop his game.
