Nottingham Forest are likely to bolster their attacking options in the summer, as they look to provide competition up top for Lewis Grabban and Rafa Mir.

The Reds were considerably active in the summer transfer window, but despite bringing in a host of defenders and midfielders, they failed to bring in a new attacker.

The likes of Daryl Murphy, Jason Cummings, Apostolos Vellios and Hillal Soudani all departed the City Ground in the summer, but Sabri Lamouchi was left frustrated after not being able to replace them.

With January looming, it is likely that they will add another forward to their ranks, with plenty of names being linked with a move Trentside.

Dwight Gayle is believed to be their prime transfer target however it is claimed that Newcastle will only look to sell him for around £15m amid interest from West Brom too.

Dundee United's Lawrence Shankland, who has scored 20 goals for club and country this term, has also been linked with a move to the City Ground, as well as veteran striker Guillaume Hoarau who has scored plenty of goals for BSC Young Boys.

Whoever comes in will look to replace Lewis Grabban in the Reds' starting line-up, with the 31-year-old scoring eight goals under Sabri Lamouchi this season.

But if they bring in another striker, where does this leave Rafa Mir? The 22-year-old has endured a frustrating first-half of the season since making the move from Wolves in the summer.

The Wolves loanee, upon his arrival at the City Ground, would have known that he faced an uphill battle to get into the team ahead of Grabban, who scored 17 goals last term.

But the Spaniard has failed to make an impact whenver he's been selected by Lamouchi, failing to find the net in a total of 12 appearances for Forest.

Mir has made only one league start for Forest this season, but squandered plenty of chances as they lost 1-0 to Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium in October.

If a new striker comes in in January, this is likely to push Mir even further down the pecking order, and whether Wolves look to recall him and send him out on loan elsewhere remains to be seen.

But at his age, Mir needs to be playing regularly, and that's something Forest can't provide him with anytime soon.
