22-y/o in: The AFC Wimbledon XI we expect Downes to pick for MK Dons clash

It has been a slow start to the League One season for Wally Downes and his AFC Wimbledon side, currently sat in the relegation zone with six matches played.

Last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Wycombe won them just their second point of the season. However, this weekend, form goes out the window when they clash with arch-rivals MK Dons at Stadium MK.

It is a rivalry that remains one of Britain’s freshest.

In their eight meetings, however, it is MK who have come out on top the most, winning five and losing just twice, with most recent victory coming in the first-round of the EFL Cup this season.

The Wombles lost on penalties that night at Kingsmeadow so it will be interesting to see if they can get their own back in 90 minutes on Saturday.

But how will Downes set up his side?

Here is what we expect…

Championship Picks

Expect a similar side to the one that last played MK this season.

Nikola Tzanev is expected to return between the sticks with Nathan Trott away on international duty. Tzanev struggled against the Dons in the EFL Cup clash, giving away an early penalty, so expect him to be seeking redemption.

Outfield, expect Downes to stick with his 3-5-2 formation. It is one that worked very well for them towards the end of last season so there is no reason to stop now. It is Will Knightingale, Paul Kalambayi and Terrell Thomas who should line-up on Saturday.

Out wide is where Wimbledon could cause some problems. Both Nesta Guiness-Walker and Luke O’Neill love to get forward and will be main creators for the striking duo of Kwesi Appiah and Joe Piggott.

Piggott missed twice from the spot back in August so expect him too to be well up for the match on Saturday too.

Expect Callum Reilly to retain his spot in the centre of midfield with Scott Wagstaff and Anthony Hartigan looking to supply some attacking threat either side of him.
