22 matches but little end product: The Birmingham man who needs to step-up to inspire promotion bid

Birmingham City have been superb this season and despite all the issues surrounding the club, Garry Monk’s men look capable of pushing for a top six finish.

When you consider the summer they had and the start to the campaign, it highlights just what a fantastic job the ex-Leeds man is doing.

However, if they are to make up the four-point gap on the sides above them, Blues are going to need more from one man in particular.

As our graphic shows, Jota hasn’t been the most productive this season and for a player with his ability, one goal and five assists just isn’t enough.

It also shows a potentially worrying fact that he hasn’t really improved in the past 12 months.

In fairness to the Spaniard, he does have to do more defensive work on the right-side in a 4-4-2 but he still has enough quality to make decisive contributions in the final third.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t been happening regularly enough.

Prior to his move to St. Andrew’s, Jota scored 12 goals in 21 games for Brentford and managed 11 in his first full season with the Bees.

At the moment, Blues are a side that are extremely hard to beat and very well drilled, but they need that bit of magic if they are to compete near the top until May.

The transfer situation means Monk is going to have to work with what he’s got and getting more out of Jota has to be a priority.

He’s doing a job for the team but he has so much more to offer but Birmingham fans haven’t seen that anywhere near enough since he completed his move.
