Southampton have edged closer to completing the transfer of in-demand Birmingham City striker, Che Adams, with a deal looking like it's set to be completed in the near future.

Football Insider have recently revealed that the deal is set to be worth £27m in total, with the 22-year-old agreeing to wages in the region of £60,000 per week at St Mary's Stadium.

It had previously been reported by the Daily Mail that the Saints had reached an agreement with Birmingham to land Adams' signature ahead of the new season.

They saw two bids rejected for the forward, but managed to strike a deal with the Blues on the third bid, which is believed to be worth £16m up front.

The latest report from Football Insider claims that Adams will undergo a medical at Southampton today, and that the signing could be confirmed as early as later today.

It's clear to see why Adams was a player in demand heading into the summer, with the Birmingham striker scoring 22 league goals as they finished 17th in the Championship last term.

Southampton will be delighted to get this deal over the line, as Adams was attracting interest from a number of clubs in the past, including Everton according to Football League World.

He'll be hoping to build on a number of impressive showings earlier this year when his move is confirmed, and if he can do that, then he'll be a regular for the Saints.

The Verdict:

You have to pay for quality, and Adams certainly has that.

His goal record speaks for itself, and Southampton supporters will be hoping that Adams can hit the ground running for them in the Premier League next season.

If he can do that, then the reported fee of £16m will seem like a bargain in the long-term, as he's still only 22, which means he has many successful years ahead of him.
