21-year-old top talent commits to Bristol City amid PL interest

Bristol City midfielder Josh Brownhill has committed his future to the Championship club despite interest over the summer linking him with a move to the Premier League, reports The Bristol Post.

The 21-year-old only moved to Ashton Gate last summer following a long stint at fellow second tier side Preston North End, with whom he came up through the ranks and went on to make 64 appearances for, bagging six goals in the process.

Yet he has since gone from strength to strength under the guidance of Lee Johnson, with the midfielder appearing in 27 of their 46 Championship matches last term, whereas this time round he has started all five of their league clashes, and indeed netted in their 2-2 draw against Brentford back on August 15.

And, in the latter stages of the summer window, Brownhill was reportedly attracting interest from those in the top tier of English football, with Bournemouth, Brighton, Burnley and Swansea all reportedly keen, yet the 11pm deadline last Thursday passed with the 21-year-old remaining on the books at Bristol City.

And the 21-year-old has quashed any speculation about his future by admitting that he’s more than happy at Ashton Gate, and sees his immediate future at the Championship club.

He said, when asked about his future: ‘Yeah, it is a great club and an amazing fan base and great manager and if everything is in the right place you need to develop as a player and keep playing.

‘So I don’t see why not.

‘I love the club, love the fans and as I say I believe what the manager has to offer and the way he plays football.’

These comments are sure to intrigue Bristol City supporters, who have seen Brownhill play a big part in their side’s solid start to the new season, with one win and three draws from their opening five games giving Johnson’s men a decent foundation from which to build as the season progresses.

And Brownhill will once again be hoping for a starting role when the Robins return to league action away at Reading on Saturday.

The Verdict: He may only have been at Ashton Gate for a year, but already Josh Brownhill is earning many admirers from those in the divisions above.

Premier League sides Bournemouth, Brighton, Burnley, and Swansea were all reportedly interested in the young midfielder, but it was quite a statement of intent from Bristol City to keep hold of the 21-year-old, and an even greater statement that the top talent wants to remain at the club for the foreseeable future.

And it is also hugely refreshing to see a young player more concerned about his own footballing development than the greater financial incentives of the Premier League.
