The EFL Awards took centre stage on Sunday night, with the Football League’s best performers of the 2017/18 campaign rewarded for a fine year.

A Club Developed XI was named, identifying players who had risen through the Football League and were now performing at the top level.

The likes of Kyle Walker and John Stones, who won the Premier League over the weekend, were included, alongside a host of other names including Lewis Cook, formerly of Leeds United.

After he was named in the Club Developed XI, Cook took to his personal Twitter account to deliver a message, with Leeds singled out for praise from the AFC Bournemouth and England midfielder:

Cook came through Leeds’ academy, with the 21-year-old midfielder making 85 appearances for the Whites over the 2014/15 and 2015/16 campaigns.

Bournemouth swooped to sign Cook in the summer of 2016, with the midfielder’s star continuing to rise since his move to the Premier League.

Gareth Southgate has recognised Cook’s ability, with the midfielder now in contention for England’s World Cup squad in the summer, having been included in the senior squad back in March.

Cook recently made his international debut, stepping off the bench in England’s 1-1 draw with Italy last month.

The Verdict

Cook is the best player to pass through Leeds’ academy in some time, with plenty of belief at Elland Road that the midfielder is destined for the very top.

The 21-year-old’s rise was recognised at Sunday’s EFL Awards, and Leeds’ supporters were delighted for him over the weekend.

To see the midfielder moving to mention Leeds is a touch of class.
