An update has emerged regarding the future of Bristol City attacker Antoine Semenyo following plenty of speculation over his future during the current transfer window.

Semenyo has been subject to interest from League One sides Sunderland and Doncaster Rovers but it has now become clear that the youngster will only be leaving Ashton Gate if the Robins are able to bring in another striker of their own.

Reported by Gregor MacGregor of the Bristol Post, he responded to a question on Semenyo during his Q&A, saying: "As we understand it, Antoine Semenyo is set to stay in house if City don’t recruit a striker. But the club is hopeful of making a breakthrough later this week. Things can change very quickly."

So far this season Semenyo has made nine first-team appearances in the Championship for the Robins but failed to score a goal or assist another for his teammates.

QUIZ: Can you guess what these 14 ex-Bristol City men are up to now?

He was flung into the starting on multiple occasions following Benik Afobe's season-ending injury back at the start of the season but has since fallen out of favour after failing to perform.

City are currently perched in eighth place with just two points separating them from a place in the play-offs as Lee Johnson looks to guide his side to promotion.

Tomorrow sees them travel to Reading where they will have the chance to narrow the gap even further, although the Royals have lost just once in their last eight Championship games, so it will be anything but easy.

The verdict

This is a sensible stance for Johnson to take.

They are already short of options in attack so the last thing they will want to do is loan Semenyo out only to fail to land their striking targets and be left even shorter up top.

Semenyo clearly has talent and it would be reckless to sell him, in my opinion. But there is no doubt that he could seriously benefit from another spell on loan to rebuild his match fitness and his confidence.
