Huddersfield Town are reportedly interested in making a move for Rochdale teenager Luke Matheson this month.

In his first transfer window since taking charge, Danny Cowley has wasted no time making alterations to his squad–bringing four players in and sending five out on loan.

It appears the Terriers aren't done yet, as the Daily Mail has reported that they're keen on signing the 17-year-old in January.

The right-back made his Rochdale debut last season but has really broken through into the first team in the 2019/20 campaign.

He turned heads with his early season performances and reportedly drew interest from both Manchester United and Manchester City.

That now appears to have died down, which may mean the Terriers are in a good position to get a deal done.

But would he be a good addition for Cowley's side? We put a spotlight on his performances so far this season to find out.

It has been a remarkable breakthrough campaign for the 17-year-old so far, who had not started a league game prior to the 2019/20 season.

Matheson has made 22 appearances for the Dale this season, all at right-back, and has developed into a key player in Brian Barry-Muphy's squad.

He announced himself to many fans of the English game by scoring an equaliser against Manchester United at Old Trafford but his displays for Rochdale all season have been impressive.

Matheson's work ethic is admirable and despite his age, he reads the game very well defensively–averaging 4.75 interceptions per 90 minutes.

However, he is not the finished article and his lightweight frame does mean he loses out in more defensive duels than he perhaps should–winning just 48.8%.

While he is slight, the 17-year-old certainly has the pace needed to succeed as a full-back. That is a characteristic that will benefit him in the final third and has helped him push his side up the field this season–making 34 progressive runs so far.

But Matheson offers more than just raw speed and has got his head up well in the final third for Rochdale this season, providing 20 shot assists for his teammates, as well as adding one goal and two assists.

He has also looked after possession well–averaging 27.39 passes per game at a success rate of 76.6%.

Cowley suggested earlier that the club needs "good men" that will work hard for their team. Matheson looks to be someone in that mould and would certainly fit into the Huddersfield boss' squad.

He is far from the finished article and you feel he will need to strengthen if he is to play week in week out in the Championship but at 17, he looks like he could be an exciting prospect moving forward.
