Sheffield Wednesday’s unbeaten start to life under Steve Bruce is going from strength to strength after beating Brentford on Tuesday evening.

The Owls have not lost any of the six games the former Aston Villa boss has been in charge of, and have not lost in seven.

Six points is the gap between Wednesday and the Championship play-off places after their latest win.

Bruce has brought a rigidity back to the Owls’ backline which has seen them concede just three goals in the last six games.

But goals have been harder to come by, except for the last three matches.

Having scored one in his first trio of fixtures, Wednesday have notched seven in their most recent three – including two more last night.

Steve Fletcher’s brace was enough to see off the Bees in what was an expert performance from the 31-year-old who rolled back the years to be dominant throughout the match at Hillsborough.

He had eight shots during his 90 minutes – by far the most in the match, making him the most active striker from both sides – and he was the only frontman for the hosts.

Four were on target – of which he scored two – with three off target and one being blocked.

Fletcher managed 74 touches during the game – second only to Barry Bannan for the Owls and fourth overall in the game.

That totalled 4.7 per cent of the games’ total possession which was not bad for a dominant Sheffield side.

Being the lone striker for the Owls, Fletcher’s role is more than just scoring goals, it’s about the link-up play and bringing others up the pitch.

And he managed that with a 68 per cent pass success rate, completing 32 of his 47 passes attempted – with two key passes setting up attacks for others in the side.

What was most impressive was the number of aerial duels he won during the game – a staggering 20 out of 28 attempted.

That’s 71 per cent, having attempted three defensively and 25 in an attacking sense and it was 16 more than anyone else in the game by some distance.

The performance all round was pretty spectacular to secure three important points for the Owls who have their sights set on an outlandish push for the play-offs.
