Sunderland may have left it late, but they started their League One campaign with a 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic on the opening day of the season.

Jack Ross did not hold back in his first transfer window in English football, signing a plethora of new players at the Stadium of Light.

After strengthening in every area of the pitch, the Black Cats will be going into the League One season as promotion favourites, which comes with a lot of pressure.

Following back to back relegation's, Sunderland need a season of success, and Ross and his team will be hoping that the acquisitions they have made throughout this summer will be enough to see them bounce straight back to the Championship.

With a lot of new faces in, means not only a dilemma in terms of team selection, but also many departures from the Stadium of Light.

With that in mind, here are two winners and two losers from Sunderland’s 2018 summer transfer window.

Paddy McNair, who played 16 times scoring five goals for the Black Cats last season, jumped ship this summer, joining Championship leaders Middlesbrough on a reported four year contract.

The 23-year-old midfielder avoided dropping down to League One with Sunderland, and now finds himself sat top of the Championship under the reign of Tony Puli at the Riverside.

The former Manchester United youth product got his move away from the Stadium of Light just in time, as Jack Ross as acquired a number of central midfielders who would have pressed for McNair’s spot in the starting line-up.

After making over two centuries of appearances for Sunderland in his seven year spell at the Stadium of Light, John O’Shea was casted away this summer, despite making 40 appearances for the side last season.

The Republic of Ireland international was somewhat of a castaway from the Black Cats this summer, despite the hard work and dedication he has shown them in previous season.

O’Shea did sign a one-year deal with Championship side Reading however, meaning the 37-year-old will be going on for at least one more season.

Jerome Sinclair joined Sunderland on a one-year loan from Premier League side Watford, in a deal that looks to be beneficial for all parties involved.

The 21-year-old will play regular first team football for the first time in his career week in, week out, while Sunderland get a top quality forward to add to their attacking ranks.

The Hornets striker has not yet been given a shot in their side, which makes this the perfect opportunity to show what he can do at a lower level.

Jack Rodwell was released by the Black Cats following their relegation to League One, and spent the summer training with the likes of Everton and Watford.

With neither Premier League side offering the 27-year-old a contract, Rodwell is now without a club.

There are a number of teams reportedly interested in signing the former England international, but with no official moves made for the midfielder, he will be at a loss for the time being.
