Barnsley began their 2021/22 Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Cardiff City.

The Tykes, who shocked the division by securing a play-off position last time out, are hoping it will be a smooth transition of power from Valerien Ismael to Markus Schopp, but the early signs were certainly positive.

The Tykes now return to Oakwell for their first home game of the campaign, welcoming Coventry City to Yorkshire. The Sky Blues came from behind to beat Nottingham Forest on Sunday, after enjoying a decent end to last season.

In what is expected to be a tough fixture for last season's play-off semi-finalists, we take a look at a couple of tweaks that Schopp may consider ahead of Saturday's clash...

Josh Benson could start

Barnsley fended off Championship interest to land the signing of Burnley midfielder Josh Benson.

The 21-year-old certainly fits the bill when it comes to what Barnsley have come to desire from their midfielders. Benson is young, tenacious, and a relentless presser, and will fit in with the work that The Tykes do off the ball.

However, he also has the technical ability to thrive at Championship level, possessing composure and a fantastic range of passing.

Benson may earn a place in the starting XI over Romal Palmer.

The 22-year-old was a regular last season and proved to be an exciting option in the middle of the park, but Schopp has some excellent options in those areas and he is still in a place where he will be assessing his options.

Aaron Leya Iseka or Obbi Oulare

The Belgian duo did not feature against Cardiff and they also missed out on Tuesday night's clash with Bolton Wanderers.

Schopp did indicate during the week that the pair were working on their fitness following their summer moves, but with three games in a week, they might be nearing their debuts.

Iseka may have more of a chance of starting on Saturday, as he has displayed in the past that he can operate across the front-line, whilst Oulare has only ever played as a striker.

Both could miss out once again if they are not yet at the fitness levels that Schopp requires, but they will certainly be on the brink of featuring if they do not play a part on Saturday.
