Wigan Athletic have shown remarkable improvement in their recent results to lift themselves out of the relegation zone in the Championship.
Paul Cook’s side have occupied a spot in the bottom-three for much of this year’s campaign, and the club’s supporters would have been fearing the worst heading into the closing stages of this season.
But the Latics have stunned some of the division’s best teams, by putting in strong performances to come away with points to show for their efforts.
Wigan beat both West Brom and Leeds United earlier this term, which has seen them edge clear of the relegation zone at the ideal time.
They now find themselves sat 20th in the Championship table, and two points clear of drop-zone with nine games remaining of this season.
They won’t be getting ahead of themselves though, as the Latics have shown that any team can beat anyone in the Championship, so they’ll be well-aware of the threat posed to their survival chances by their relegation rivals.
We look at TWO transfer links that Wigan Athletic should consider revisiting in the summer when the transfer window reopens.
The Sun had previously reported that Wigan were interested in signing Rhodes during the January transfer window, although a move failed to materialise.
It was thought that the Latics were keen on a loan deal for the former Blackburn Rovers striker, with the Lancashire-based side also interested in landing his signature earlier this season.
Kieffer Moore has impressed in recent weeks, but you would imagine that he’d thrive alongside a striker of Rhodes’ quality in the future.
Football Insider reported back in January that Wigan were one of the teams keen to sign Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan, who is currently on loan with League One side Blackpool.
Heneghan is out of contract in the summer, and the Latics will be hoping they can reach an agreement with the Blades defender at the earliest of opportunities.
Leon Balogun will return to Brighton and Hove Albion when this year’s campaign reaches a conclusion, so it makes sense for Paul Cook to add some depth to his defensive options.
Can you name these former Wigan Athletic defenders?
