Sheffield United finally appear to be a club back on the up after far too long a hiatus down in the third tier of English football.

Under Chris Wilder the Blades are rediscovering some passion and fight, and fans are once again excited about what the future might have to hold at Bramall Lane.

United have a decent history in the game, but have also had some truly miserable times over the past two decades, including playoff failure on numerous occasions.

However, like most clubs, there are facts and stats which are not well known across football and only a select few fans of the club will know.

United will be hoping to make some more history this season in League One as they look to cement a place back in the Championship, so with this in mind, we have taken a look at some facts about the club.

Here are TWO things you probably never knew about Sheffield United...

Bramall Lane is the oldest professional football stadium to still be hosting games

Sheffield United have been at Bramall Lane since formation in 1889, but their ground was actually built and put into use in 1855.

The ground was initially used to host cricket matches, and hosted full England international matches until United were formed towards the end of the century.

It has also played host to international football, giving it the prestigious honour of hosting both cricket and football fixtures at the highest level.

They hold the record points total to not win promotion from League One

Since League One was formed in 2004/05 (taking over from being the old Division Two), the Blades hold the record for the most points achieved without winning promotion.

United racked up a massive 90 points, but amazingly, were pipped to the post by local rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the final few games of the season.

In a heartbreaking season for the club, they also went on to lose the playoff final on penalties to consign them to further misery and time outside of the top two leagues in England.
