It's been a poor couple of weeks for Carlos Carvalhal and Sheffield Wednesday, who have managed just one point from their past three games.

A 2-0 defeat to fellow play-off hopefuls Reading this weekend seriously stinted their progress in the top-six, with Fulham now only one point behind the Owls with just a handful of games remaining.

It's imperative that Wednesday pick up as many points as possible over the coming weeks if they're to pull away from the likes of Fulham, Norwich and Preston, all of whom are sniffing around waiting for teams above them to slip up.

And with massive games against Barnsley, Rotherham and Newcastle in the coming weeks, these handful of fixtures could arguably decide whether this campaign has been another fruitless push for the top-six or not.

So with that in mind, here's 2 things that could genuinely sabotage Sheffield Wednesday's Premier League promotion hopes this season...

Their dependence on teams below them to slip up

For Carlos Carvalhal, the chance to pick up maximum points against the likes of Burton, Villa and Reading was of huge importance and it's quickly turned into some of the worst games of their season.

Nine points out of nine would have seriously helped their chances of making the top-six but Fulham's win over Newcastle last weekend changed everything and had the Cottagers beaten Wolves this weekend, they would have replaced the Owls in the top-six.

Now, it's as much about everyone elses form as their own and during a play-off run, that makes for extremely nerve-wracking times indeed.

The goals are drying up

Barring the 5-1 win over Norwich at the start of the month, Wednesday have only scored once in their past three games and for a side chasing the play-offs, that's simply not good enough in the slightest.

The Owls have plenty of goals in their ranks with the likes of Fletcher, Forestieri and Rhodes all available upfront and to score just once against a struggling Burton side to draw 1-1 just won't do at this stage of the season.

If the goals dry up, their season could be over. F
