Leeds have been a surprise package this season under Garry Monk and it would've take a brave man to back them for promotion at the start of the season, but they are right in the mix.

The former Swansea boss has done an outstanding job at Elland Road and he has done so with limited resources, tied in with off the field issues.

This includes the ownership saga with Radrizzani close to taking over and Cellino being fined for a financial misdealing in the past.

January is a big month for both Leeds and Monk.

The Leeds boss needs to improve certain things on the pitch, but to do so it is down to the Leeds board to provide him with finances to bring in the necessary quality.

With Leeds in the midst of a takeover saga, the finances on offer could be minimal.

Here, I will look at 2 things Garry Monk must address in January...

Squad Depth

Leeds United manager Garry Monk talks to his players

One area where Leeds are lacking is their squad depth.

In comparison with some of their promotion rivals, the Whites' squad is very light, so that is something that Monk definitely needs to address if they are to keep pace with the rest of the pack.

If Leeds are to pick up a spate of injuries towards the end of the season, the players they put in to replace them won't be of enough quality to match what is missing.

Monk needs to bring in a few quality players to provide stern competition for places or else Leeds' promotion push could be derailed.

Striker Quality

In Chris Wood, Leeds have one of the best strikers in the league, but he alone won't be enough to get Leeds over the line.

With the New Zealand international recently picking up an injury, it presents Monk with a huge dilemma of who to play.

Monk has Marcus Antonsson at his disposal, but after his summer move to Elland Road, he hasn't exactly set the world alight.

Adding another quality striker would also give Leeds another option - if Chris Wood is going through a dry spell, then another striker can come in and take his place, hopefully taking over the goal scoring duties
