Sunderland's promotion hopes have taken a big blow this weekend with the confirmation that top scorer Josh Maja has made his move to Bordeaux.

The 15-goal striker has sealed his move across the Channel and will be hoping to continue his fine form for the French side, while Sunderland will no doubt need to act and replace such a big loss to the team.

Maja has been superb for Jack Ross' men and his departure represents a huge blow to the Black Cats who are chasing promotion back to the Championship.

Sunderland though remain a big pull down in League One for any potential new arrivals, and despite there being only a week or so left of the January transfer window, they should have no problem in attracting a replacement to the club.

With that thought in mind then, we here at FLW have identified TWO potential replacements for Maja at Sunderland...

Leon Clarke

The Sheffield United man has fallen down the pecking order a bit at Bramall Lane and the arrival of Gary Madine has hindered his chances of regular first team action further.

A move for Clarke to a club like Sunderland would be a big boost to all involved, and for Sunderland in particular, they would be getting a man who knows where the net is at that level.

Clarke was key for the Blades last term, while he also played a big part in League One promotion for Chris Wilder's men.

John Marquis

With money in the bank, a move for Doncaster Rovers striker Marquis should not be out of the question.

Marquis sits as the only man to score more than the departed Maja in League One this term, and he would be a shrewd capture for the Black Cats.

A lethal finisher and already proven in the third tier, the Doncaster man would be a brilliant capture for Jack Ross and his team.
