A goal-scorer is the difference between a promotion push and mid-table mediocrity for Jaap Stam's Reading this season.

The Royals will be hoping to put in a solid first half of the season in order to perhaps convince the owners to splash out on a top quality striker that is guaranteed goals every week, something they've been missing for some, some time.

Yann Kermorgant is the regular starter up top for Reading in their 4-3-3 formation, but hasn't got anywhere near a regular goal-scoring rhythm up top.

The untested Joseph Mendes is another option up top as well as academy product Dominic Samuel, who's only been tried on the left wing so far this year, neither of which will guarantee goals up front, but may offer another option.

In the pursuit of goals up front and perhaps in the pursuit of promotion, FootballLeagueWorld writer Charlie Firth identifies TWO strikers Reading really ought to try and secure a deal for this January...

Lewis Grabban

grabbann

The 28-year-old is struggling to find first team football at Bournemouth, with only three substitute appearances to his name so far, which accumulates to just 58 minutes of football.

He was reportedly linked with a move to Reading on the summer deadline a couple of months ago, but no move for any striker materialised and they've been left with Kermorgant up top.

Grabban is a proven Championship goal-scorer with 34 second tier goals to his name at Norwich City and Bournemouth respectively. He'd be a fantastic addition to their side.

Will Grigg

A man who was in heavy demand over the summer as the likes of Celtic and Hull City eyed up moves, but neither got a deal done for the Northern Ireland international.

He's scored five goals so far this year, after a fantastic season in League One with Wigan Athletic last year in which he netted 25 goals, on top of scoring 20 goals the season before on loan at MK Dons.

With Wigan struggling, it may be an opportunity for Reading to swoop in for a deal for Grigg, who's shown he's ready for Championship football as the fourth top scorer in the division.
