Goals have been a scarcity for Coventry City this season, and that is why they find themselves caught deep in a relegation battle in Sky Bet League One at the moment.

Last season, the Sky Blues were heavily reliant on goals from loan superstar Adam Armstrong, who netted twenty times in the league. This season, they have not managed to secure an adequate replacement.

Marvin Sordell is the most prominent scoring threat that is available to Mark Venus, and he has bagged three league goals. However, he is mainly being deployed as a winger to accommodate Andre Wright, Dan Agyei or Marcus Tudgay and, whilst all three can offer sporadic goals, none have the ability to net twenty in a season like Armstrong did.

Venus - or a permanent manager if they appoint one - will undoubtedly need to strengthen in this area in January. It is equally important as strengthening the centre back regions.

At least two new strikers need to come in because Wright and Agyei are scheduled to return to their parent clubs in January too.

Here, FootballLeagueWorld writer Jay Williams identifies TWO options that Coventry should explore in January...

Jay Simpson

Jay Simpson has thrived at Leyton Orient and is way too good to be plying his trade in the fourth tier of English football.

With the East London club in disarray, Simpson was inexplicably benched for a long while, and it was rumoured that he would join Southend United.

That move never materialised, so Coventry should make a January swoop for the 27-year-old, who bagged 25 goals in League Two last year.

Dominic Samuel

Dominic Samuel does not seem to feature in Jaap Stam's plans at all for Reading, so he could be set for a move in January, either on loan or permanently.

The 22-year-old enjoyed one of the best spells of his career during a loan spell at Coventry in 2015, helping Tony Mowbray's Sky Blues stay afloat in League One with his goals.

Coventry fans would certainly welcome the quick, strong, athletic forward back to the club with open arms.
