Stoke City are facing a hugely important summer transfer period with the Potters needing a strong window to correct certain issues within their squad.
Michael O’Neill’s side know that they are going to need to shift on a couple of players from the squad during the summer transfer window to make room for potential incomings. That is a task that the Stoke boss has spoken out about on a regular basis over the last few months or so.
There is already starting to be speculation emerging surrounding the long-term futures of a couple of players at the Bet365 Stadium. The Potters will be hoping therefore that they can move on one or two players quite quickly to enable them to have more time to identify and bring in the right additions to enhance the overall quality of the squad.
With that all in mind, we have taken a look at TWO Stoke players that we might never see where a Potters shirt again and the reasons why…
This is a potential outgoing that the Potters will be reluctant to see happen during the summer transfer window. However, Nathan Collins’ future is in doubt at the moment with there having already been a reported attempt from Premier League Burnley to come in with a £10 million offer for the 19-year-old. That initial offer has been rejected by O’Neill’s side.
The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has given Stoke some hope of keeping hold of Collins this summer. He has reported that both Burnley and the Potters are far apart in terms of their valuations of the defender. That does suggest that the Potters have a chance of holding on to him if they maintain their firm stance over how much they feel he is worth in the current market.
However, with the Potters’ finances stretched at the moment it might be difficult for them to continue to turn down sizeable bids for Collins if Burnley and other teams come in with more offers. As a result, Stoke fans might have to reluctantly prepare themselves for his exit this summer. At least if he is sold it would provide a sizeable boost to their transfer budget.
Can you name the Stoke City player who has been carded the most in each of the last 16 seasons?
One player who could be a casualty of Stoke’s need to trim their wage bill this summer is Sam Clucas. It has been reported by The Sun on Sunday (09/05/21, p59) that the Potters are willing to allow him to leave the club potentially even on a free transfer if he can find a new club in the next few weeks or so. That comes despite his current deal not expiring until the summer of 2022.
Clucas endured a mixed campaign this season and saw his impact on the side affected by injury issues. He did still manage to make 24 Championship appearances in which he contributed two goals and three assists for O’Neill’s side. The Sun on Sunday’s report revealed that Blackburn Rovers are one side that might be interested in him if he is available.
Given the Potters might allow him the chance to move for free, you would be surprised if there was not at least one side like a Blackburn who were willing to take him. That means that Stoke supporters might very well have seen him wearing the shirt for the last time.
