Sheffield Wednesday will be aiming to get back to winning ways in their clash against Charlton Athletic at Hillsborough, as they look to get their season back on track.

Garry Monk’s side were denied the chance to collect a much-needed three points in their 3-3 draw at Birmingham City last weekend, with Scott Hogan scoring a stoppage time equaliser for the hosts, which means that the Owls are now winless in seven Championship matches.

The Owls are in real need of managing to secure a first win since they won 2-0 at Leeds United last month, but given their current form Charlton will have some belief that they can pick up a positive result – and that could help the London club continue to move themselves away from the relegation zone.

Here then, we take a look at TWO Sheffield Wednesday weaknesses that Charlton could look to expose…

Defensive issues

Sheffield Wednesday have conceded 15 goals in their last seven Championship matches, during a period where they have been struggling to find any real form or momentum, Monk’s side had shown some signs of tightening up at the back after conceding just two goals in three matches, before they shipped three goals against both Reading and Birmingham.

The Owls’ defensive frailties were on show at Birmingham last weekend, with Monk’s side unable to see out a 3-2 lead in the last few minutes of the game, allowing Hogan to run on to Lukas Jutkiewicz’s header and fire the ball past Cameron Dawson in stoppage time.

Monk’s side's defensive problems will not be helped by the fact that Morgan Fox might not being able to feature, with the defender being assessed ahead of the game after coming on at half time against Birmingham – and Charlton could look to expose Sheffield Wednesday’s problems at the back as they look to secure back-to-back wins.

The pressure surrounding Monk

Charlton could also look to expose the pressure and tension felt around the stadium at Hillsborough, with Monk remaining heavily under pressure from the club’s supporters following the Owls shipping that stoppage time equaliser at Birmingham to make it seven league games without a win.

The Owls will likely be needing to score an early goal and get off to a bright start against Charlton to keep the home supporters behind the side, but were the visitors to come and frustrate Sheffield Wednesday then the crowd will begin to grow more restless, which could put pressure on the players on the field.

After they were beaten 3-0 in their last home match by Reading, Sheffield Wednesday will be under even more pressure to ensure that they pick up a much-needed win against Charlton – and Lee Bowyer’s side could well exploit that by getting off to a strong start to the match.
