Sheffield Wednesday have had somewhat of a resurgence under new manager Steve Bruce, and the play-offs is more of a possibility than the distant dream it was entering 2019.

The Owls have been excellent, but the top six may just be one step too far.

That may give Bruce a chance to experiment with his squad, and he could give minutes to a few youngsters.

There are many in the academy waiting to be heard.

Here, we look at two of their gems that have shown promise and could push for a first-team spot in the not too distant future.

Do you agree, or have you spotted a better talent ready to make the big step up to the first-team? Let us know in the comments section below.

Ash Baker

Ash Baker may be 22, so a bit older than most youth players, but the Welsh right-back will be hoping his breakthrough can come soon.

He has a number of substitute appearances, mainly due to injuries, but the Welshman will fancy his chances in the coming years.

Matthew Penney

Matthew Penney has a number of first-team appearances at full-back, but his full break in the first-team hasn’t come yet.

After failed loan stints at Bradford City and Mansfield Town, Penney will be hoping Bruce gives him a chance to shine in the first-team.
