Cardiff City must look to pick themselves up from their disappointing defeat in the South Wales derby last weekend as they prepare to welcome Birmingham City to the Welsh capital this weekend.

Neil Warnock's side suffered a 1-0 defeat against bitter rivals Swansea City following Ben Wilmot's 24th-minute header, with the Bluebirds falling short in every department as they delivered a poor performance at the Liberty Stadium.

The defeat leaves Cardiff sitting 14th in the Championship, while they are also still without an away win this season, but they will be looking to respond in style when they face Pep Clotet's Blues side on Saturday.

Warnock will surely be considering making a number of changes ahead of their upcoming clash, with the 4-4-2 system he deployed against Swansea having lacked effectivity, and this could mean some Cardiff regulars see their places come under threat.

Here are two changes Warnock should consider making to his side ahead of the Birmingham match...

Adding a fresh look to the defence

Cardiff have already shipped 20 goals this term, which is more than what would be expected from a Warnock side at this stage, and the defence did not deliver a convincing performance against Swansea on Sunday.

The centre-back partnership of Sean Morrison and Aden Flint has sometimes looked relatively solid, but they have started to look more prone to an error recently, which could mean Warnock makes a change ahead of the Birmingham match.

Sol Bamba will surely enter the side in place of Flint when he is fully fit but, until then, it could make sense for Warnock to give summer signing Curtis Nelson a run-out alongside Morrison.

It does seem as though the Cardiff starting line-up is in need of a refresh, and this could be a subtle change which has the potential to have a wholly positive effect on the Bluebirds' defensive efforts.

Moving away from deploying two strikers up front

The Cardiff boss' decision to start with both Robert Glatzel and Danny Ward at the Liberty Stadium was not a move that paid off, and Warnock should revert to his usual formation when they welcome Birmingham on Saturday.

This decision will perhaps be made easier by the fact that Glatzel has now been ruled out for a couple of weeks with injury, which makes Ward the prime candidate to lead the Cardiff line with three players deployed in central midfield.

This would ensure that the Bluebirds are not overrun in the middle of the pitch in the same way they were against Swansea, while Ward has also looked to have greater effectivity when he has been deployed on his own in attack this term.
