West Brom are looking at making a decision on former Norwich man Wes Hoolahan, with a possible new contract in the offing for the 36-year-old.
He signed on a short-term deal earlier this season and has had limited impact at the Hawthorns, coming off the bench four times and making one start in the League Cup.
Despite that relatively small amount of first-team exposure, he's looking likely to be offered an extended deal to play for the rest of the season and possibly beyond.
He isn't the first veteran to be offered a deal by the Baggies either, Tyrone Mears has been with the club, Greg Halford is currently being assessed and Gareth Barry is still contracted there at 37. It makes Bakary Sako, another free transfer, look youthful at 30-years-old.
Whilst experience in a squad is important, we think West Brom are taking a huge risk if they do offer Hoolahan a new deal at the club. There are two reasons why it isn't a good idea, as we explain.
Let's say they offer a new deal, until 2020, then get promoted. Is Wes Hoolahan a Premier League player? If not, they're lumbered with a wage next season that could be better placed elsewhere.
Even a deal until the end of the season eats up some budget and for a player with four appearances from the bench, it makes no sense at all.
What message does it send to the exciting young players in their Under 23 squad, or the Under 18 side?
There should be a desire to promote youth, give them a few minutes from the bench here and there, not a 36-year-old.
Signing him sends the wrong signals to the plethora of talented kids just aching to break through at the Hawthorns.
