Frank Lampard has emerged as a leading contender to replace Maurizio Sarri if Chelsea decide to sack the struggling Italian coach.

That's according to Sky Sports, who claim that senior figures are holding discussions about the future of the ex-Napoli boss after they were knocked out of the FA Cup on Monday night.

They also add that Zinedine Zidane and current Derby boss Lampard are on the shortlist to replace Sarri should he go.

Lampard is a legend at Stamford Bridge after a glittering career that saw him pick up plenty of trophies, whilst he remains their all-time leading scorer.

Given his connections with the Blues, this is surely the 40-year-old's dream job and he would find it extremely difficult to turn Chelsea down should they make an approach.

However, here we look at TWO reasons why we think he would actually be better off staying with the Rams...

He won't get any time at Chelsea

If Sarri goes, he will be the latest manager to leave Chelsea without feeling they got a fair chance.

The Premier League side are quite happy to regularly fire managers and who can blame them? It's brought success over the years.

But, Lampard should be looking for somewhere he can build and he's kidding himself if he thinks his legendary status at the club will give him longer than the others.

Jose Mourinho, arguably their best ever manager, was sacked twice and several others left even after winning trophies.

It's not the club for an up-and-coming manager.

He's not ready for that level yet

Perhaps more importantly, Lampard should recognise he isn't yet ready for that level.

Chelsea are a club who expect to be in the Champions League and competing for all the major trophies, which is a massive jump from trying to get into the play-offs with Derby.

Lampard doesn't have the experience to deal with such expectancy and he still has a lot to learn.

There's no doubts that he's an exciting young manager but he should look to take what would be his dream job when he's proven himself a bit more and is clearly ready for it. That's not the case now.
