Rangers are currently two points off Celtic who lead the Scottish Premiership, and will need to add in January if they are to close the gap further and leapfrog their Old Firm rivals.

One player who is reportedly on Steven Gerrard’s new year shopping list is Gillingham striker Tom Eaves.

If reports by Sky Sports are to be believed, the Scottish giants are keeping tabs on the League One hotshot ahead of the window opening in less than three weeks.

Gerrard is keen on bolstering his squad to remain a title challenger when the split in the SPL happens later on in the season.

The 26-year-old Gills striker is tall, powerful and has been impressive over the last couple of campaigns, but is out of contract in the summer and has so far indicated he will not sign a new deal with the Kent club.

Eaves has already managed 14 goals in 26 appearances in all competitions so far this season – just four off his total for the year prior.

Rangers will face a fight for his services form Championship clubs Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers, according to Sky Sports.

With that said, here are two reasons why signing the powerful Gillingham asset would seriously boost Rangers' title hopes.

It’s pretty obvious, but Tom Eaves would bring goals to Ibrox having scored 32 in the last year-and-a-half for Gillingham.

He is hitting prime form, and a move to the SPL would be a considerable step up regarding demands, but it is something the striker would surely be capable of taking in his stride.

The six-foot-three-inch striker can score all types of goals and is not your typical big striker; he has more in his locker than to be a target man.

For a big man, he has a good touch, is how the old saying goes, and on this occasion it is true.

Despite his size and languid figure, Tom Eaves is a dominant player who can run with the ball at his feet and pull of things over strikers similar in stature could only dream of.

From being adept at heading the ball, holding up play to scoring screamers and going on mazy runs, Eaves is a player who has it all in attack and can be used in several different systems – all of which he can excel in.
