Sheffield Wednesday are interested in signing defender Efe Ambrose on a free transfer after the 30-year-old left Hibs at the start of the month.

The former Celtic man moved to the Edinburgh outfit in 2017 and has been a key player at Easter Road, helping Neil Lennon's side win promotion back to the Scottish Premiership and then securing impressive finishes.

However, the Nigerian international triggered a clause in his contract at the start of the month that allowed him to leave on a free transfer.

And, according to TEAMtalk, the Owls are keen on bringing the experienced defender to Hillsborough.

New boss Steve Bruce isn't set to take over until February 1, but the report states that the Yorkshire outfit are prepared to push through with this transfer, although there is interest from around the world for Ambrose.

Here we look at TWO reasons why Wednesday must do all they can to finalise a deal for the defender though...

He has good experience

The Owls have had defensive issues all season and it's clearly an area that needs to be addressed this month.

One reason for that is the lack of experience at the back and it's notable how Keiren Westwood has made a difference since returning in goal.

Ambrose has played in the Champions League for Celtic, won trophies and played in big games for Hibs. He should settle instantly to life in the Championship and make an instant impact.

He is on a free

Another reason that they need to sign Ambrose is because he is a bargain.

We all know the FFP restrictions Wednesday are under so the reality is that they are going to have to search for a few bargains if they are to improve.

Obviously he can ask for a decent wage but the chance to pick up the 30-year-old on a free is great business for the Owls.
