Queens Park Rangers are on the lookout for a new manager after they sacked Steve McClaren, and Michael Appleton has emerged as a candidate.

The Telegraph have revealed that the former Leicester coach has held talks with key figures at Loftus Road and is a leading contender alongside Tim Sherwood, who remains favourite for the job.

Appleton's last full-time job was with Oxford but he left the club in 2017 and hasn't been back involved since, bar a caretaker spell at the Foxes.

Therefore, he would represent something of a risk if the R's board did decide to go with him.

However, the 43-year-old does have a decent reputation in the game and here we look at TWO reasons why he would be a smart appointment for the London outfit...

He will have a long-term vision

Some clubs can often make an appointment and you can instantly tell it's thinking about the short-term.

But, giving Appleton the job suggests the R's would be looking ahead and that's the direction they need to go in as they don't have the finances to compete at the top immediately.

He would have a plan and will hope to be given time to implement it, like he did at Oxford where he created a stylish, impressive side.

He can bring through younger players

Another reason why Appleton may be a good choice to succeed McClaren is because of his ability at bringing through younger players.

There is a talented group coming through at Loftus Road and they will want more academy graduates in the side over the next few years.

He will give them a chance and could help several individuals develop.
