Sheffield United lost out to rivals Leeds yesterday as a late mistake from Dean Henderson allowed the visitors to take all three points from Bramall Lane.

The Blades had been, for the most part, well in the game, and arguably deserved the draw in what was a feisty encounter.

However, the performance yet again highlighted a need for the Blades to sign a new striker, with the likes of Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick failing to fire yesterday.

Today though has seen the news emerge that Chris Wilder could be set to target Premier League goalscoring legend Jermain Defoe in what would be a six month loan deal.

The Bournemouth man has yet to start a game for the Cherries this term and has a superb Premier League goalscoring record from his spells with Tottenham, Sunderland, and West Ham to name but a few.

A big name signing like this would surely do wonders for the Blades' promotion hopes, and we at FLW took at look at TWO reasons why United simply have to make this happen...

They need a top striker

As good as Billy Sharp, David McGoldrick, and Leon Clarke have been for the club, the Blades still seem to lack that player who frigthens Championship defences.

Defoe would do just that, and despite his age, defenders would know they can't afford him a strike at goal due to his lethal finishing ability.

His signing would be a superb capture for United, and would definitely give them more hope of reaching a playoff spot.

It would show fans that the board mean business

United fans have long since questioned their board at times, and this would be a big step towards them proving that they are serious about promotion to the top flight.

Defoe would no doubt command quite a big wage, much bigger than that of which many of the Blades' current stars are on.

While it won't open the floodgates so to speak, it will be a big coup, and should give fans the confidence that Wilder will be backed if needed.
