Middlesbrough are hoping for a very productive January as they look to give Tony Pulis the players he needs to make a successful promotion push this season.

Winger Rajiv van La Parra has already arrived and according to TEAMtalk, Boro are interested in doing a loan deal for Crystal Palace outcast Jairo Riedewald.

The former Ajax man was brought to Selhurst Park last season under Frank de Boer but he is struggling for game time now.

The report states that he will leave on loan but Pulis does face competition from the player, with clubs from Holland, Spain and France all showing an interest.

However, we don't think it would be a big blow for the Teesside outfit if Riedewald did move elsewhere.

Here we look at TWO reasons why Boro should not pursue a move for the versatile 22-year-old...

They don't need more defensive players

The reason Boro are in the top six is because of their defensive work.

They have conceded just 19 goals in 27 games, which is easily the best in the league and shows just how hard they are to break down.

As well as that, they have strength in depth in that department, with several good defensive players not involved in the win over Birmingham on Saturday.

The priority this window needs to be at the other end of the pitch.

He's not a certain upgrade in any position

Additionally, there's no way that you can see Riedewald is an upgrade on what Pulis currently has.

As mentioned, the defence is doing well, so where would he fit in? It's highly unlikely he would play centre-back and there are plenty of defensive midfielders at the club too.

The only place you could make a case for the Dutchman is at left-back but George Friend does a decent job and is a key part of this good defence.

Riedewald has shown nothing with Palace to suggest he would come in and make a big difference to the team.
